Burned Out on Zoom? Burn Calories at Your Desk.

Zoom has allowed us the opportunity to realize new ways to work that weren't readily available or acceptable before the pandemic. It has been an excellent tool over the past two years. However, we all know Zoom fatigue is a real thing.

Stanford News says, "It's not just Zoom. Popular video chat platforms have design flaws that exhaust the human mind and body." Whether it be developing an unhealthy self-perception from looking at ourselves for hours at a time on a monitor or finding ourselves working several more hours a day than we previously permitted, there are ways for us to combat the woes that accompany the prosperity of our new-found reality.

Most notably, reduced mobility in terms of physical movement throughout the day has been the topic of many conversations with colleagues and peers. So I set on the path to creating a truly enjoyable home office that would help maximize my calorie burn. How could I get in more steps, keep my core strong, and still make all my Zoom calls work on my behalf? The answer was easier than I thought once I put a few ideas together and created a dedicated space.

First on the list was a walking treadmill that would easily fit under my desk. The Citysports Under Desk Treadmill has been the perfect addition to my home office. It is light, sturdy, quiet, reaches up to 4 mph, and is easy to set up.

I recommend testing out your talking, typing, and walking speeds, as well as which setting on your preferred fitness tracker is most accurate at tracking your activity. I had to calibrate my Apple Watch for 'Other' and have found that 1.2 mph is my maximum speed during Zoom meetings.

Before each meeting, I ask my colleagues if it is acceptable to 'walk' during our call. I do not walk while leading important discussions or conducting 1:1s. Respect for the other side of the camera remains paramount.

How can you still focus on your health when you need to sit for an important conversation? This is where the URBNFit Exercise Ball comes into play. At 5'7", the 65mm ball is the perfect size for me to use as a chair. It improves your posture, strengthens your core, provides opportunities for stretching, all while sitting in front of your computer.

Neither the treadmill nor exercise ball could work at a typical desk, which is why I purchased the next addition to my home office, the Flexispot Standing Adjustable Electric Desk. Whether I decide to sit, stand, or walk, all it takes is the press of a button to adjust my desk to my preferred height for the activity at hand. The desk fits perfectly over my treadmill with a few inches to spare on either side.

This entire configuration of fitness options is tied together with a Selfie Ring Light ensuring my eyes don't get too tired during early morning or later afternoon sessions.

The entire environment is compact, functional, and focused on maximum productivity and wellness in one space. While I still encourage turning off the camera and going for an outdoor walk when possible, the reality of long hours in one space no longer causes guilt for what would otherwise be a relatively sedentary scenario. In fact, I have found the treadmill and the ball invite conversation around health, fitness, and self-care and bring many a smile to the team meetings. They know I am getting in my steps and setting an example of how you can burn calories when you are burned out!
